Notes for initiates working the furnace.
Iron ore and copper ore are each smelted at a furnace with one coal, leaving a bar and some ash. Buried treasure gives up ore but never bars, so the smelting is always yours to do.
Iron runs through the rock of the Underground, and needs a pickaxe enchanted for the work. Copper veins run beside the lava of the Lava world, and any pickaxe will break them.
A bar is worth what it took to make. Count your coal.
