Day 3. The Council would not fund a second survey of the frozen world, so we funded it ourselves. Six of us, three sledges, and every bar of iron we could buy on credit.
Day 9. The cold takes something from you each morning and gives nothing back. Pell wanted to turn home. I reminded him that the cold does not care whether we quit. Only we do.
Day 14. Ice Elementals in the drifts. We lost a sledge. We have begun caching supplies in the ice so we are not carrying everything we own on our backs.
Day 22. Pell has stopped talking about home. Each night now he mends the sledge runners instead, and they run truer for it. A tool looked after is a tool that gets you back.
Day 31. Turning back. We found no ruins and no riches. We found the way, which is worth more, and we have marked it for whoever comes after. Our caches are theirs, if they can break the ice. I left my sextant in one of them. I no longer need it to find the way.
