The Granaries of Vell

Found onBookshelf
Vell was a farming world of some forty villages, each with its own fields and its own granary. In A5:310 a Monolith preacher came to the river towns and spoke of the Parity: that no village should go hungry while another's granary stood full. The villages voted to pour their grain into one great storehouse and draw from it by need.

The first winter, everyone ate well.

The next spring, the farmers of the river towns asked why they should plough before dawn when the hill villages, who did not, ate the same bread. Fields went half sown. The storehouse keepers, who sowed nothing, grew in number.

By the third winter the storehouse was empty, and no one could say whose fault it was, for no one's field was their own.

The Monolith absorbed Vell in A5:316. Its people, hungry and without hope, did not resist. Arcanum scouts who reached it later found a single field still sown, behind an old woman's wall. She had never poured her grain into the store.
